How I Made My Garden Pond
Creating a garden pond had always been a dream of mine. I wanted a peaceful spot in my backyard where I could enjoy the sound of water, watch dragonflies dance, and maybe even have a few fish. Last spring, I finally decided to make it happen. Here’s how I built my own garden pond, step by step!
Planning the Pond
I started by deciding on the size and shape. I didn’t want anything too big, but large enough to support some plants and a few small fish. I marked out an area roughly 2.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide with a garden hose to visualize the shape.
Next, I checked that the spot would get some sunlight (for plants) but also partial shade (to help control algae growth). I also made sure it was away from large trees to avoid falling leaves clogging the pond.
Digging the Hole
Once I was happy with the location, I began digging. It took a couple of days, working in short sessions. I made the pond about 60 cm deep at the deepest point, with shallow ledges around the edges for placing pond plants.
Installing the Liner
I lined the hole with a layer of soft sand to protect the pond liner from sharp stones. Then I placed a flexible PVC liner over the hole, gently pressing it into all the curves and ledges. I left plenty of extra liner around the edges to trim later.
Filling the Pond
I slowly filled the pond with water, smoothing out wrinkles in the liner as it filled. Once the pond was full, I trimmed off the excess liner, leaving about 20 cm to secure under decorative stones.
Adding Stones and Plants
Around the pond edge, I placed flat stones to hide the liner and give it a natural look. Then I added aquatic plants like water lilies and marginal plants such as irises and marsh marigolds. These help keep the water clear and attract wildlife.
Installing a Pump and Filter
To keep the water moving and clean, I installed a small pond pump with a filter. The gentle bubbling sound added a soothing touch to the garden atmosphere.
Introducing Fish
After letting the pond settle for a few weeks, we will introduce a few small goldfish. I promess I will show you the next results! Also , see my daughter how happy she is about this project ! xD
What are you waiting ! You can start yours with a small budget if you already have a piece of garden and some rocks .
